Making an Approach (September 2013) It began by accident, I can’t underline the importance of that factoid. How to create a practice that might be open to accident, instead of being modeled after so-called conceptual practices where first thought/best thought decisions are introduced in order to foreclose unwanted vulnerabilities? The year was 1996 and Phil Hoffman and I decided to take a road trip south to see Mike Cartmell. Is Mike a friend? Surely, though he knows nearly nothing about me. He’s so smart I just try to keep him talking in hopes that some of his intelligence will soak into me via osmosis. His second marriage had ended suddenly and catastrophically and after being summarily ejected from his Alabama home he wound up shipwrecked in a Buffalo rooming house. We drove south with vague notions of cheering Mike up, though perhaps we were the ones requiring cheer. When we arrived at his derelict east end digs, I remember him saying that I looked “remarkably preserved for my age” which startled me a little because I had recently gone on the life saving cocktail of drugs that had kept me alive as a cyborg. Though Mike didn’t know it at the time, “preserved” was an apt word for how I was experiencing myself at that moment.

Ellie Epp is a Vancouver-based artist who has made four short gems in the past three decades. Largely silent and containing little camera movement, they celebrate an erotics of attention, taking as their subject a London swimming pool (Trapline), venetian blinds (Current), the Canadian wilderness (Notes in Origin), and film itself (Bright and Dark). Each of these films demonstrates the act of looking, carefully re-marking the line that separates the visible world from an off-screen eternity. Fascinated, languorous, and rigorous, they serve to reanimate the viewer, who is the real object of the camera's gaze. It is from these moments of attention, collected over a lifetime, Epp argues, that the stuff of personality is made - incendiary moments burned into the synaptical roots. Each of us is a frame for experience, looking out through habits of seeing which she makes visible in her work, suspending perspectives of the everyday.

When I ventured into Germany in the fall of 1989, scant months before the wall came down, one of the most enduring surprises was the widespread and elegant use of super-8. While I'd cut my teeth on difficult filmmaking at the Funnel, haven for narrow gauge makers, there it was usually associated with a rough hewn aesthetic, and an approach to filmmaking that was not so much guerrilla as kamikaze. What I encountered in Germany was of another order entirely, and while it's difficult to generalize about a production that was so prodigiously decentered in its proliferation, there was an exquisite care and a meticulous unfolding of possibilities I never dreamed imaginable. Conditions have changed in Germany over the intervening years, integration with the East has meant declining government cultural subsidies, and the collaborative efforts that dotted the German landscape, eschewing traditional notions of artisinal authorship, have since collapsed. Many makers have turned to video or day jobs, and cultural priorities have shifted stateside into the promotion of 'new media'--CD Roms, computer interface, das Internet. But a handful of makers endure, and none more elegantly than Matthias Muller who was, at the time of our meeting, simply the best super-8 filmmaker I'd ever seen. His jewel-like apparitions continue to astonish, even as he re-invents himself using a broad iconography of 50s melodramas, diary documents, and an expressionistic lean learned from the pre-Weimar period.
