Logan D A VHS tape from '99 holds thrills and chills.Solid mix of short tales. The homemade stop motion bits were hilarious.The tales:Shredding--a punk rock band that loves pulling pranks break into a condemned music venue in which the members of their favorite band perished in a fire. Overly long build-up to the action but finale is frenetic.Suicide Bid--a sorority pledge is made to stay in a coffin overnight. Gripping performance from lead.Ozzy's Dungeon--a children's game show hides a dark secret. The weakest of all of them but the finale is amazing.The Gawkers--young boys decide to spy on their sexy new neighbor. Hilarious and scary.To Hell and Back--what happens when a summoning goes wrong. I've been a fan of the V/H/S series since the first one and it's a travesty to see what it's become. Usually there's only one or two bad segments per film but since moving to Shudder the quality has dropped dramatically. A bunch of the shots are a noticeably higher resolution than the VHS it claims to be filmed on, and it's painfully obvious. Plus there are glaring audio sync issues; yells that don't match up with the mouths on screen for example. Overall a dreadful movie I wouldn't recommend to anybody who's a fan of the previous entries to the franchise. But still, I had to suffer through each of these individual sections and via the medium of criticism, now you can too! I'll try to keep this as spoiler free as possible, just in case you don't heed my warning that staring at a blank wall in complete silence for 2 hours would be preferable to watching this movie. The first section with the bands is just a dreadful cringe-fest of teenagers having been written by people who've never even been in the same building as teenagers. The dialogue made my skin crawl and just as you think it's about to be even remotely rewarding, it lets you down worse than I did my parents when I decided to be a musician myself. 2/10, for at least having a decent premise in the middle.Then it takes you to the sorority hazing video. The less said about this the better. I didn't even realise I was watching the main part of that segment, I thought I was still in the setup. I found myself waiting for the good bit, and then it gives you the "payoff" as if it had even earned it. In earlier films there was a story to be told in each tape, but this lacks any sort of substance at all and relies entirely on the makeup effects and claustrophobia to provide the scare. 0/10, Ryan Reynolds did it better.Ugh, moving forward unfortunately and we end up at the game show segment. You know what? The actual game show itself was an interesting idea. It's a real shame they took it in the direction they did. I would have stayed on set with that, have things slowly start to devolve over time and then have the final test of the game show provide the scare. But it switches to some kind of torture-p*rn for a spell, and dives balls-first in to the supernatural for seemingly no reason at all. Again, nothing of this is earned and whoever half-baked this idea needs to be removed from the Shudder kitchen immediately. 1/10, a single point awarded for nearly having an original idea.Next the tape that has been providing the link between each of the tapes gets recorded over by the brother of the kid making the link tape, which I would give credit to, but the link tape in previous movies had a reason for them to be linked. The 2nd film did this best, with the investigators looking for the man who was a tape collector. This just seems to be a bunch of perverts for the worst part of 15 minutes with diabolical dialogue; once again proving the creators of this film have never seen a teenager up close (presumably for legal reasons). You might as well skip to when you see the gratuitous breasts in this one because you're missing absolutely nothing. 0/10, arguably a worse rehash of the spy-glasses segment from a previous entryThe closing part suffers from a bad case of "I'm so startled" syndrome, but otherwise I've got to give props for originality. Comes in strong and drops you right in it, along with the protagonists. The comedy could be toned down a lot, as it detracts from this being the single solitary unnerving part of the entire movie. I'll be generous and give this one a 6/10 for being a strong premise and an interesting exploration of comradery, albeit completely out of place in a movie like this.
