This easy Cheeseburger Frittata Recipe is a delicious low carb option for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

The frittata is one of those dishes that often get overlooked as a go-to. Frittatas are quicker cooking and a tad lighter than their fancy cousin, the quiche, having no crust, or heavy cream. And similar to an omelet, they are the perfect low carb vehicle for a variety of flavor combinations. Which is a good thing, since I was in the mood for a cheeseburger, without the carbs along for the ride. Hence theCheeseburger Frittata.

For this Cheeseburger Frittata recipe, cheddar cheese, sautéed onions, and browned hamburger, seasoned with salt, pepper, plus our favorite hamburger addition, garlic powder, were added. But create your Cheeseburger Frittata your way. Bacon, tomatoes, along with sautéed mushrooms would be great additions too.

Even though Frittatas are commonly cooked in a skillet stovetop, then finished in the oven, I baked this simple frittata in a pie pan in the oven for the whole cook time. It worked fine and I liked the lighter texture a little better than the more firm bite that most frittatas I have made stovetop have.

This easy frittata is not only a great option for breakfast, but served with soup or salad, but thisCheeseburger Frittata is an excellent option for brunch, lunch or supper too. (And if you wanna enjoy it with a squirt of ketchup, I certainly won’t tell anyone.)

Cheeseburger Frittata

Yield: 8

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 30 minutes

Total Time: 45 minutes

This simple frittata, made with ground beef, sautéed onions and cheddar, is a delicious low carb option for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Ingredients

  • 12-16 ounces (weight) ground beef
  • 1/4 teaspoon + dashes salt, divided
  • 1/4 teaspoon + dashes pepper, divided
  • 1/4 teaspoon + dashes garlic powder, divided
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium-large onion, chopped
  • 10 large eggs
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 4 ounces (weight) cheddar cheese, shredded, divided
  • optional additions: bacon, sautéed mushroom, sliced/diced tomatoes

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400-degrees F.
  2. Butter or coat with cooking spray pie pan. (I used a 10-inch pie pan for this recipe, but a 9-inch deep dish should work as well.)
  3. Brown hamburger with a few pinches/dashes of salt, pepper and garlic powder.
  4. Heat olive oil over medium heat and sauté onion with a pinch of salt and pepper until translucent.
  5. Beat together eggs, milk, 1/2 of shredded cheddar cheese, and 1/4 teaspoon of each: salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
  6. Evenly distribute the browned hamburger on the bottom of the pie pan, then top with sautéed onions.
  7. Pour the egg mixture over the top of hamburger and onion. Top with remaining cheese.
  8. Bake in 400-degrees F oven for 15-20 minutes until set. (I used a 10-inch pie pan, so adjust cooking time accordingly for different size.)

I have only made a frittata once – not because I don’t like them, but because I forget about them. And seriously could anything with the word cheeseburger in the title be a bad thing?

I can’t have dairy. Would Coconut Milk or Unsweetened Almond or Water work, instead? Water would be the easiest. Thanks. ~ Justin

FAQs

Should I add milk to my frittata? ›

Do you add water or milk to a frittata? Let's just say that full-fat milk or heavy cream is the best way to go. Water will work, but you won't get the density and rich texture you'll get when you use a full-fat liquid. Sour cream, crème fraîche or yogurt can be substituted for the heavy cream in this recipe.

What is the best pan for frittata? ›

Use a cast-iron skillet.

I like to use an enameled cast iron skillet, which does not require any pre-seasoning. If you don't have a skillet, go make this breakfast casserole recipe instead.

How do you make a frittata not soggy? ›

Just be sure too avoid adding anything with too much liquid.

Too much liquid will prevent your frittata from setting and, in some cases, make it kind of watery. For that reason, he warns against adding milk, and he recommends draining any vegetables that create a lot of water.

Why is my frittata not cooking in the middle? ›

If the center is still liquid, you've got to cook longer. If it's almost set, cook the frittata a few more minutes, then remove it. As long as the frittata is still in the hot pan, it will continue to cook. That's why it's important to pull the dish from the oven as soon as it reaches that "set" stage.

What is the frittata formula? ›

The Frittata Ratio to Memorize

So how do you make a great frittata every time without always using a recipe? The answer is a ratio. For every six eggs, use 1/4 cup heavy cream, 1 cup cheese, and 2 cups total of vegetables and/or meat.

When should I add milk to eggs? ›

First, beat the eggs.

Place them in a medium bowl, and whisk until the yolk and whites are thoroughly combined. Add the milk or water, and whisk again! The beaten eggs should be an even yellow color, with no translucent spots or streaks.

How do you keep frittata from burning on the bottom? ›

I keep a lower heat to try to keep the bottom from burning. I strongly suggest using a nonstick or well-seasoned cast iron pan (I LOVE this pan - crisps, frittatas, casseroles, the best)…or the whole thing can be baked in a well greased, oven-proof dish.

When making a frittata which ingredient should be pre cooked prior to adding it to the egg mixture? ›

This also holds true for aromatics, like onions, and sturdy veggies, like raw potatoes. "They won't get much more tender once you add the beaten eggs," says Perry, "So cook them fully before combining everything." Don't be afraid of getting a little color on the vegetables: That's what makes them so delicious!

How do you thicken a frittata? ›

When cooking a frittata, it's always a good idea to add dairy, specifically whole milk. Dairy isn't absolutely required to make a frittata, but if you want an ideal creamy consistency, you should add it. If milk isn't your style, you can even add yogurt to your frittata recipe to thicken it.

What kind of cheese is best for frittata? ›

Go for high moisture cheeses

According to Cheese Science, high moisture cheeses like mozzarella and smoked Gouda are great melting cheeses that give frittatas their desired texture. Meanwhile, a low moisture cheese like Parmesan won't melt in the oven, especially when it's surrounded by a mixture of eggs.

How do I know when my frittata is done? ›

The eggs should be cooked through, not runny and a knife should come out clean when inserted into the centre. You can also give the skillet a gentle shake to determine if it is done; a runny frittata will jiggle when you shake the skillet.

When determining how many eggs to use in a frittata generally? ›

The egg to dairy ratio: If you are making a smaller frittata use 6 eggs and 1/4 cup of dairy, and if you are making a larger frittata use 12 eggs and 1/2 cup of dairy. You can use milk, sour cream, yogurt, milk kefir, or any other form of dairy you have on hand - just make sure it is full fat.

Why is my frittata so watery? ›

Why is my frittata watery? It's really important that you cook the vegetables before pouring over the egg mixture, especially if the vegetables have a large water content. In the case of this baked frittata recipe, the spinach, in particular, needs to be well cooked.

Why is my frittata bland? ›

Here, we'll discuss these mistakes and how to fix them. You don't season the frittata. If you don't add seasoning to your frittata, it will end up tasting bland.

Should I put milk in my eggs for an omelette? ›

Do you add milk to an omelette? Many people add either milk or cream to their omelettes in order to bulk them out and have a more substantial dish without the need to add an extra egg. While this does work, it's crucial not to go overboard or you'll end up with a mixture that's too loose.

Should a frittata be runny? ›

Follow this tip: Cook the frittata in the oven just until the center is no longer jiggly and the edges are golden-brown. For extra reassurance it's done, you can place a sharp knife into the center of the frittata.
